Pioneer Peak: Grixis Midrange (Pioneer, Magic Online)
Who would I be if I didn't at least make one Grixis video for my new favorite format?
Gameplan
This Grixis list has to be the most Grixis thing we could do. We're all about grinding our opponents out of all of their cards and then win on the back of our many solid threats!
Nothing is safe in our opponent's hand as we've got six ways to rip cards out of our opponent's hand. Because of how much discard we have in the main, we can't run a ton of countermagic as our top decks could be a little weird if we're trying to answer something on board. Once we've emptied our opponent's hand, we just stick threats like The Scarab God or any of our planeswalkers to run away with the game. With numerous ways of throwing cards away, we also load our opponent's yard up which means a card like Drown in the Loch acts as both a counterspell and removal spell. Speaking of removal spells...
We've definitely got some amazing answers in our deck. With mono-black aggro running around, having hard removal is pretty important. Kolaghan's Command feels amazing as we're able to pick off a threat and blow up Smuggler's Copter, which is important as an unchecked copter will run away with the game. I'm not entirely sure if Dreadbore is better than Hero's Downfall as the instant speed matters a lot more than you'd think.
The way we can grind our opponent's out of even more cards is with cards like Jace, Vryn's Prodigy, as we loot away dead cards and recast all of our removal and disruption again. This card has been an all-star since pioneer has come out.
Here are just a few bombs that we have. We all know how powerful Kalitas is if you get to untap with it. Nicol Bolas, the Ravager was one that I was skeptical about at first but after playing with it a little bit, it was an absolute house as it's hard to deal with, attacks our opponent's hand, and blocks all the flying vehicles. If we ever get to the point where we can flip Bolas, the game is pretty much over. Lastly, The Scarab God was a win-con on it's own in standard and I feel like it's the same here. Especially since it can be mainboard graveyard hate which is huge. It's also absurdly hard to deal with as Pioneer doesn't have a ton of cheap and efficient ways to exile The Scarab God.
Conclusion
The deck could've definitely finished 4-1 but I made a misplay by clicking around too much. This deck feels like it can really fight the aggressive strategies and the mono-green strategies. We just need to be careful about Oko, Thief of Crowns. I haven't actually gotten paired against control with this deck but I have to imagine with how much disruption we've got, we should have a slightly favored match up. I can't help but feel like adding an additional copy of Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Nicol Bolas, the Ravager, and Kolaghan's Command might be necessary. If I were to try another league, It would look something like this
