Upgrading C14 White: Swords and Cats
So you just got your brand new Forged in Stone C14 deck and have been slaying mages with equipment wielding Kor. Now you're itching to up the power level of your deck and to create the ultimate planes-destroying Voltron monstrosities. Today we're going to go over some upgrades you can make to your deck. Remember, it's your deck: You can pick and choose which themes/cards fit your play style best. If you don't have the C14 deck yet, you can still grab all five on ebay for just under $140 shipped as of this writing. The full decklists can be found here.
Equipment
There are two major subthemes in Forged in Stone: equipment and tokens. We cannot talk about equipment without talking about swords. Jam as many into your deck as your budget allows.
Nahiri can't do it all alone. She may need a little help from her fellow Kor. Dig into your Cawblade deck from yesteryear that you keep around for nostalgia, or maybe tear into your Legacy Deathblade and bring the Kor of honor Stoneforge Mystic. Of course, where she goes the most broken artifacts must follow: Batterskull and Umezawa's Jitte. Don't worry, Wizards already did you a solid and included the most broken equipment (Skullclamp) in the deck!
Tutors
We need to make sure we can actually find some of our equipment, so be sure to include some of these tutors in your deck:
Sword bearers
OK, this much equipment might be a little much for a lowly Kor soldier to wield. We need to call upon the Hundred-Handed One. Legend has it that if you equip Hundred-Handed One with all five swords, Zeus himself will descend from Mt Olympus and give you flavor-props.
Equipment Synergy
Would you like free card draw and 0-cost equip costs? Puresteel Paladin would like to take up your holy cause. Instant speed equipment is also very nice as the deck doesn't run many tricks.
Tokens
To extend the token subtheme, we look to the Equipment loving Leonin. White Sun's Zenith is already in the deck, and we can make even more kitties with the included Kemba, Kha Regent. Throw a Brimaz, King of Oreskos in there for more flavor points, and the biggest cat of them all: Ajani, Caller of the Pride. Remember, if you equip a cat without screaming "Thunder, Thunder, Thundercats hoooo~," you lose the game.
Maybe you have a severe allergy to cats. No worries, we can pump out Soldiers and Clerics.
Some of these generators are heavy on mana, so you may want to consider throwing in a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx.
Planeswalkers
Pretty much any incarnation of Elspeth or Ajani will help you generate or pump your tokens. Ajani Steadfast does double duty ticking up Nahiri, the Lithomancer as well.
Good Stuff
Good white stuff. What would a deck be without these fine staples? Removal and board wipes.
Hate Bears
You might want to add a few hate bears to your line up. They disrupt your opponents while giving you a body to equip.
Card Draw
The deck is a bit light on card draw, so you may want to add some of these in:
Conclusion
What should you remove to make room for all of these awesome cards? If you're adding token generators, I would remove some of the larger angels like Serra Avatar. If you're adding more equipment, I would remove some of the worse equipment already in the deck like Loxodon Warhammer.
If you think I've missed any key cards, please leave a comment below. Also let me know which color deck you'd like to see me cover next! See you soon and may you receive many Sword-triggers.
