Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest news is the release of Edge of Eternities and Standard rotation, which is shaking up the meta and card pool. Back when Final Fantasy released a couple of months ago, we discussed how Starting Town would likely be a staple land in Standard after rotation, thanks to painlands and half the fastlands rotating and the random assortment of just five shocklands taking their place. Well, this week Starting Town more than doubled up to $37. While this Standard demand will likely be somewhat short-lived—as more sets release and we get more dual lands, the pressure on Starting Town will diminish—the card is also popular in Pioneer and some Commander decks, which offers a nice buffer should the Standard demand fade. Considering that similar lands like City of Brass (which is $20 despite endless reprints) and Mana Confluence (borderless) (over $30) maintain a high price based on eternal demand alone, it wouldn't be shocking to see Starting Town maintain long-term value.
Despite Edge of Eternities just releasing, the finance world is already two sets ahead. At San Diego Comic-Con, Wizards revealed that Allies are a supported tribe in Avatar and spoiled a new Ally Panharmonicon legend in Katara, the Fearless. As such, older Allies are already on the rise, with Jwari Shapeshifter gaining nearly 800% to $7, Kabira Evangel 372% to $3, and Sea Gate Loremaster 363% to $5. Expect more Ally madness as the release of Avatar, which comes out in November, draws closer.
Remember that much-maligned Ravnica: Clue Edition set that dropped alongside Murders at Karlov Manor? So far, it has had little financial relevance, but this might be changing with Apothecary White jumping 150% this week to over $7 as a popular upgrade for the most popular new commander from Edge of Eternities, the lobster chef Ragost, Deft Gastronaut. Does this mean you should be running out to buy Clue cards? Probably not. While the unpopularity of the set will likely make it easier for cards to spike if they do end up in demand, in general the set is so underpowered it seems unlikely we’ll see across-the-board price increases anytime soon.
