Pioneer Peak: Abzan Jegantha Humans


This week we've got a list submitted by SirEklz and I'm beyond excited to try it as I have been wanting to play some kind of Abzan deck! I've also been wanting Humans to take shape and this shell seems fun...

Gameplan

The general idea is to get on the ground early with our cheaper humans

With our early game established, we can start chipping away and snowballing our threats with disruption like Kitesail Freebooter and even General's Enforcer as the Enforcer makes it difficult for our opponents to kill any of our three drops as that's where a ton of power lies.

Not only do we have a powerful anthem effect in Kudro but it's a way for us to attack our opponent's graveyard and remove big threats. Much like Kudro, Anafenza, the Foremost is a big body that grows the team while exiting creatures. Lastly, Thalia, Heretic Cathar is a good way to slow opponents down by forcing their creatures to enter tapped along with nonbasics which could be all we need to close a game. But of course, there's some sweet value to be had in Collected Company...

Though this card isn't as impactful as it is in older formats, this is the main reason we have green. The ability to refill the board after a sweeper or threaten a tricky combat step for opponents is unmatched. This is wonderful in events where we're also digging for sideboard cards like Drannith Magistrate and etc. Of course, the card's variance can sometimes be saddening but the upside seems sweet.

Why Jegantha, the Wellspring ?

To be honest, from playing it, it feels just like a super buff mana dork that can potentially lead to a free human but is often just a guaranteed 5/5. I haven't felt that we really lost anything to play this card either. 

Conclusion

** POTENTIAL VIDEO SPOILERS **

We got the 3-2 record but the deck was a ton of fun. Being able to Collected Company felt really good. I think something I'd like to see more of is General's Enforcer and Chevil, Bane of Monsters. Of course, Chevil requires us to have more removal so maybe it's something out of the sideboard for burn as it forces removal before it generates value. This leads me to the next point, I think we want more cards like Dire Tactics and interaction for the burn match ups as I think we're aggressive enough to take down the slower and more value-based decks. I'd also want to add maybe one more Drannith Magistrate into the deck because it shuts off companions and Lurrus shenanigans. The 1/3 body also means it survives Shock. Regardless, the deck definitely gave me my Humans fix and I want to say thank you to SirEklz for submitting this list!
