This Week in Legacy: Deep Dwellin'

Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're going to take a further look at some of the Lost Caverns of Ixalan cards coming, especially those coming in the Commander product as well as the Jurassic World collection. In addition that we've got two Challenges to look at from this weekend as well as some paper event news.

Without further ado, let's dive right in!

Bingo! Dino DNA!

Last week we did some poking at Lost Caverns of Ixalan and because we were not yet done with spoiler season, we should take a look and see if any of the Commander cards could see play as well as any main set cards we missed. There's also a sub set of Jurassic World cards coming as well with some mechanically unique stuff.

Broadside Bombardiers

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

This is really sort of cool in the Goblins shell. Sacrifice your Goblin Matron after you cast it in second Main Phase for a Goblin Grenade to the face? It's really cool. The fact that this has Menace/Haste does a lot for making sure it can attack so you can activate its Boast ability, and there's cute tricks you can play after you attack with Aether Vial and stuff like Munitions Expert (Vial in Expert, clear a blocker with its trigger, then sac to Boast and kill another creature). This is very reasonable and definitely on rate for a good Goblin.

Dauntless Dismantler

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

What puts this card slightly out is the fact that it's a 1/4, so Recruiter of the Guard can't go pick it up. If that were the case, I'd feel a lot higher on the card, but the effect in general is really strong. Meltdown on a creature is silly enough for sure.

Dino DNA

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

The fact that this costs one is important enough for me in formats where Urza's Saga exists. I don't think this is your best Saga target, but it is a weirdly interesting graveyard hate card that has the upside of being able to imprint multiple creatures on it. Activating at sorcery speed though is probably way too slow, but it's so cute.

Permission Denied

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

This is singlehandedly the best flavored counterspell of all time I feel, and it's also good versus stuff like Veil of Summer, as most Veil lines want you to counter Veil and then they follow up with action because you likely don't have more countermagic. This stops the Veil, but also prevents them from going forward with their combo turn.

Also, that flavor text.

Sovereign Okinec Ahau

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

I think what makes this creature interesting for me is in a Dark Maverick shell where you have things like Elvish Reclaimer, Knight of the Reliquary, even the Orc Army token from Orcish Bowmasters that all can have power greater than their base power. This one is a reader but it seems really good with some of those cards.

Tetzin, Gnome Champion

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

I saw Peter Van Der Ham post about this and an interaction Chrome Host Seedshark, which seems sort of goofy. I don't know if it's good, but it's pretty cool and in reasonable colors to do fun things with.

Colossal Dreadmaw

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

You again! What are you doing here?!

Buffalo Chicken Dip Legacy 12

Our good friends at the Buffalo Chicken Dip Series are back with another event upcoming on 11/18 at The Warp Gate in Westerville, OH. This is one of their smaller events and this go around they're running the event through Eminence Gaming's Command Tower software.

First prize for this event is a Revised Volcanic Island and prizes down to Top 8 and possibly Top 16 with full attendance. You can find all of the tournament details here.

Legacy Challenge 11/4

The first Challenge event of the weekend was the early morning Saturday event. This event had 67 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here. The Match Up data wasn't finished at the time I needed to submit the article but it will be longer term. Basically just means no win rate data as I am writing this.

A lot of the top end of the format here was 4C Uro Control and Dimir Scam. There were a number of Unknowns in this event as well due to not having full complete data.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Lands 1st The_Bza
RUG Delver 2nd NeodivergentGanguilt
Reanimator 3rd snoopy-magic
4C Uro Control 4th ziofrancone
Doomsday 5th fj_rodman
ANT 6th DavidVanDerRaven
4C Uro Control 7th GodOfSlaughter
Death's Shadow 8th Luca5937

Pretty interesting Top 8 here really. Reasonable amount of variety. At the end of the event it was Lands that won!

Loading Indicator

I always enjoy seeing Lands do well, and this list looks quite good. Sphere lands is the way to go at the moment for sure.

In Second Place we had RUG Delver.

Loading Indicator

Questing Druid continues to prove its worth in these lists. It's a very straightforward card and it grows into a very big threat if left unchecked, but also draws cards. Definitely intriguing for sure.

Also in this Top 8 we had ANT.

Loading Indicator

Beseech the Mirror basically pushed Mind's Desire back out of the format it seems. Can't really see the fault here honestly. Desire is super fun to play with but it definitely has shown over time that it's not insane against the format.

We did have some 4C Uro Control in the event, but the one I wanted to really poke at was the Seventh Place list because it wasn't the traditional 4C Bant+Red version, but a Bant+Black version.

Loading Indicator

Bowmasters and Beanstalks and Bindings of my! This list looks pretty interesting and spicy. I also just love seeing Pernicious Deed in decklists.

Legacy Challenge 11/5

The second Challenge event of the weekend was the mid afternoon Saturday event. This event had 99 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here. The Match Up data wasn't finished at the time I needed to submit the article but it will be longer term. Basically just means no win rate data as I am writing this.

4C Uro Control was very popular yet again and the two Tempo decks at the top of popularity were Grixis Delver and Scam.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Paradoxical Outcome 1st TonyScapone
8Cast 2nd ItsSwiftyTime
Goblins 3rd Piiinooo
Boros Stompy 4th mmapson125
Reanimator 5th Magic_Dads71522
4C Uro Control 6th zerzab11
4C Uro Control 7th RikRin
Stiflenought 8th RAV92

What a wildly interesting Top 8 here. At the end of the event it was TonyScapone, a true master of the combo craft on Legacy PO that won!

Loading Indicator

Oh this list is so cool. I am digging every little thing about it. It's almost like an 8Cast deck that ditches the aggro game plan for a very combo slanted strategy and that is superb. In fact, you can watch Tony talk about this Challenge win.

In Second Place we had 8Cast.

Loading Indicator

This deck also looks very good. Lorien Revealed is a sweet include here and having Hullbreacher main seems very interesting.

Also in this Top 8 we had Goblins.

Loading Indicator

The Name Sticker Goblin has reared its ugly little green head yet again! It seems quite strong in these Goblins lists for sure. Being able to ramp into something seems very good.

Further down this Top 8 we had our good friend Michael Mapson on Boros Stompy.

Loading Indicator

You may notice Boros Stompy showing up now on the Legacy metagame page finally. We did fix that issue and man, this list looks good. My favorite part here is two copies of Eowyn, Fearless Knight in the sideboard. This deck is quite good and something to keep an eye on.
