This Week in Legacy: The Song of Storms
Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're going to be digging into a cool list that popped up in the 5-0's this past week in a sweet Song of Creation storm decklist. Unfortunately do not have Challenge data to talk about, as the lists have yet to be posted, so little bit of a slow week overall. Hopefully, next week's lists with the Showcase Qualifier get posted. We do however have our ever-present Spice Corner.
Let's get right to it, shall we?
A Song Only Creation Can Sing
This week's deck focus caught my eye for a number of reasons. One of those being that Song of Creation is a really cool card from Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths and this deck utilizes it in an interesting fashion, but also because I know the pilot SamuraiFunn. They have for a long time been responsible for some truly interesting creations in both Legacy and Vintage, so it was fun to see their newest creation.
The biggest thing about this deck is that it utilizes the interaction between the cards Echo of Eons and Narset, Parter of Veils, which can occasionally end games for the opponent just by denying them resources. Another powerful interaction however is the interaction between Riddlesmith and Ovalchase Daredevil.
Essentially what happens in this interaction is that Daredevil becomes a free card to pitch to the Riddlesmith trigger, allowing the deck to gain something of a card advantage engine by being able to continually pitch Daredevil with each artifact casting. This in of itself is very interesting but also becomes supercharged when the deck has Song of Creation in play.
As most of the deck is permanent based mana and card advantage pieces costing 0, a resolved Song of Creation can simply spell game over, but especially if the deck has access to the Riddlesmith engine, by being able to draw three for each artifact spell. This makes for a very unique and interesting aspect of the deck, as Song is an incredibly powerful card capable of just winning on the spot.
The primary win condition for this deck ends up being whatever is suitable at the time, from Tendrils of Agony to Grapeshot based on the opponent's amount of disruption, which this deck can easily play around via playing its own copies of cards like Veil of Summer.
This is definitely a super interesting combo variant, so if you're looking for something that's slightly off the cuff of the Karn Echo variants, this might be worth looking into. It certainly look like a ton of fun. Kudos to SamuraiFunn for coming up with this deck!
Community Legacy Update
Just a reminder that as of this publication, the ManaTraders Series Phase 1 matches will be completed and Phase 2 Swiss will take place on August 29th (this Saturday), with the Top 8 happening on Sunday. I didn't get a chance to participate in this like I thought I might, and I'm out of the house this weekend camping, so couldn't really do the Swiss phase anyways. Good luck to those in the community who did make it in and have fun in the event!
Also in other big Community news, our good friend Rich Cali (of Delver fame and fortune) is now writing for ChannelFireball! Big congrats to Rich, and look forward to his content!
Ban Watch
Since we had no Challenge data this week, we can't really dig too much into our charts on the Legacy Bannable cards, but we will have more data hopefully next week especially with the Season Two Showchase Qualifier coming up.
