Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance we're starting to see the impact of the impending release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It turns out that one of the major creature types in the set is Mutant, which seems pretty obvious in hindsight. As a result, Hancock, Ghoulish Mayor, one of the few existing cards that supports the creature type, jumped nearly 200% up to $7. If you're looking for other Mutant-themed cards, the best options are likely Jenova, Ancient Calamity and Jason Bright, Glowing Prophet, which could also see a bump if building Mutants becomes popular in Commander.
Speaking of TMNT, collector booster boxes are currently right around $400, which is technically about $50 more than full MSRP (with Universes Beyond collector boosters listed at $38 a pack), about $70 more than Spider-Man, and $30 more than Avatar. While $400 is still a lot to pay for randomized cardboard, it seems like the insanity of last summer—brought on by massive demand for Final Fantasy, which sent collector boxes skyrocketing to over $1,000—is thankfully over.
Finally, we're still seeing a bit of a hangover from last week's Commander ban list update, in which Wizards mentioned the possibility of unbanning Iona, Shield of Emeria, Griselbrand, and Sundering Titan in a future update. Iona, Shield of Emeria doubled up over the past week on the news and is now $30, and Griselbrand doubled as well, although a bunch of reprints in Masters and Remastered sets has kept the cheapest printing in the $10 range. On the other hand, Sundering Titan hasn't budged at all, which either means players think it's unlikely to be unbanned, think it could be unbanned but that mass land destruction being disallowed at lower brackets will keep demand light, or simply that there are too many high-supply reprints (like The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts) for it to be financially relevant even if it does get unbanned.
Personally, I wouldn't bet on any of these cards being unbanned. Oddly enough, I think Sundering Titan might be the safest of the three, assuming most people are playing with brackets to keep blinkable mass land destruction from showing up at lower-powered tables.
