Weekly Update 2014-11-23
MTGGoldfish News Flash |
StarCityGames Tournament Changes
In the biggest news of the week (possibly the death of Legacy) StarCityGames announced changes to their Open Series tournaments. The tldr is they're turning them into GP-like weekends. There will be one format per weekend across two-days (with byes being possible). 14 out of the first 19 Opens of 2015 are Standard, 3 are Legacy, and 2 are Modern. There will be Super IQ side events on Sundays for Legacy (similar to what they have for Modern now). However, these are not streamed so we'll be losing the weekly Legacy coverage. No more arguing about how to properly resolve a Brainstorm! This doesn't look good for Legacy and it'll be interesting to see if anyone steps up to keep Legacy alive.
Disdainful Stroke is February's FNM Promo
Disdainful Stroke was announced this week as the February FNM Promo. As a reminder, Stoke the Flames and Frenzied Goblin are the promos for December and January respectively.
Magic Online Leagues Update
The Magic Online team posted a Magic Online Leagues Update this week. For those of you unfamiliar with Leagues, the idea is you can basically play your matches at your pace instead of having to play all matches over a 3-4 hour stretch. Think Hearthstone Arena. This week's update tell us that the Closed Beta will start in December (apply here), and provides some details on how they will work:
- Rather than set a limit on the number of matches a week, the limit will be on total matches. You can play as much (or as little) as you want in one sitting.
- There are no tiebreakers. Prizes will just be on total number of wins.
Magic on South Park
The South Park episode this week featured Magic the Gathering! Titled Cock Magic, Episode 8 of Season 18 covers the illegal goings-on in the basement of City Wok. While they embellished the gameplay of Magic to appeal to the mass-audience, they did maintain the key aspects of Magic and even used real card names, including cards from Khans of Tarkir! You can watch the full episode online at South Park Studios.
