Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |

This week in the world of Magic finance, much of the big news is related to the impending release of March of the Machine. The biggest gainer of the week was Kinsbaile Cavalier with the Knight payoff shooting up a massive 350% to $20. While Knights are supported in the main March of the Machine set, it seems unlikely it will be enough to make the tribe take off in a format like Modern. On the other hand, the new Knight-themed Cavalry Charge Commander precon lead by Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir is getting a lot of praise for being the strongest of the March of the Machine precons and Kinsbaile Cavalier is essentially the only Knight tribal card that isn't in the deck, so players are snagging copies as an upgrade which is driving up the price. If you need a copy, you'll save a few bucks by going with the Duel Deck printing, which increased this week as well, but is still in the $10 range.
Meanwhile Hex Parasite is on the rise (up 62% to almost $9 this week) thanks to its ability to defeat Battles with its activated ability. Whether or not this price still stick is another story. If you look back on Hex Parasite's price chart you'll see a pretty interesting example of how a Magic card slowly increases in price. Starting with Dominaria back in 2018 and the release of sagas, the one-drop has been bought out and seen a massive price spike five or six times, although after a few weeks it trends back down, but never all the way back to its pre-buyout low. Before the latest buyout, it was hovering in the $4 range. Based on its history, my guess is that once more supply hits the market it will settle at around $6 until another counters-themed set or mechanic releases and the process will repeat itself. It's also worth pointing out that the only reason these big price jumps are even possible is that Hex Parasite is now over a decade old and has never been reprinted, so supply is fairly low. Once it inevitably does get reprinted, it should fall back down to a dollar or two, assuming it hasn't caught on as a staple in a competitive Modern deck by then, which is unlikely but not impossible.
Finally, a couple of popular Dinosaur commanders are creeping up with Gishath, Sun's Avatar creeping up a few% to $30 and Zacama, Primal Calamity up 18% to $18. This is likely due to the surprise Dinosaur sub-theme of March of the Machine with the tribe gaining several powerful new additions including Etali, Primal Conqueror, Ghalta and Mavren (showcase), Ancient Imperiosaur, and Kogla and Yidaro. We also know that we're going back to Ixalan this fall, although exactly what this trip to the plane will look like isn't exactly clear considering Mark Rosewater recently said that Lost Caverns of Ixalan is an "underground' set. While it might be tempting to pick up the Dinosaur legends now in case they spike more as Ixalan nears, I'd hold off. With Wizards new focus on inter-set synergy, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see at least one and possibly both of Gishath and Zacama in Commander Masters this summer. The cards are too expensive for Wizards to put them in a Commander precon, but they'll likely want to increase supply before Lost Caverns of Ixalan releases, which makes Commander Masters a pretty obviously landing spot. If they don't show up in Commander Masters, then snagging the copies you need before Ixalan spoiler season makes sense; if we do end up getting a bunch more sweet Dinosaurs, prices could continue to rise.
