Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week Magic finance once against revolved around Modern Horizons 2. The biggest gainer was Shinka, the Bloodsoaked Keep, which has suddenly become Modern playable thanks to Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer. The one-print Champions of Kamigawa land jumped from $10 to $43 based on this increased play. Two other members from the cycle - Shizo, Death's Storehouse and Minamo, School at Water's Edge are already fairly expensive and have a pseudo-reprinting in Myster Boosters, but Eiganjo Castle and Okina, Temple to the Grandfathers are both relitively cheap and only have one printing. It might be worth snagging a copy or two just in case something comes along that makes them Modern playable. As we see with Shinka, the Bloodsoaked Keep, the ceiling is high for one-print Kamigawa block cards.
Artifact hate cards are also on the rise thanks to Modern Horizons 2 make Affinity a real deck again in Modern. Kataki, War's Wage nearly tripled up to around $12 while Shattering Spree doubled to $15. Expect more increases in coming weeks. Modern is still evolving and adapting to the present of Modern Horizons 2 in the meta. Combine that with the return of paper Magic and the stage is set for some big price swings over the summer.
Last but not least, in some sadder news, it's looking more and more like Pioneer be on its last legs. There was hope that with paper Magic returning and the format coming to Arena the format would be revitalized, but with Wizards announcing this week that Pioneer support isn't coming to Arena in the near future (and, depending on how you read the announcement, perhaps not at all) the future of the format looks a lot dimmer than it did a couple of months ago. While I don't think you need to rush out and panic sell your Pioneer decks, I would think twice before investing heavily into the format. With Arena support seemingly off the table and Modern booming in paper, it's not clear where Pioneer fits into Wizards plans for tournament Magic at this point. If you have a thriving local Pioneer scene that is great, otherwise I'd way before spending hundreds of dollars on a Pioneer deck, because it's not clear when (or even if) you'll get a chance to use it.
