Weekly Update (Feb 26): The Best Commander Card in Every Color

This week in the world of Magic finance we see that paper tournament Magic is still alive and well! Last week Reid Duke used a Pioneer Indomitable Creativity deck to win Pro Tour Phyrexia. This week, as the result of his performance, the mythic sorcery nearly doubled in price, increasing 90% to over $32. In the past Pro Tours were a big driver of card prices as players would rush out to buy whatever deck performed well. There was some question as to whether this would still happen during the Magic Arena era where competitive plays has moved more and more online, but considering the rise of both Indomitable Creativity and Worldspine Wurm (up 63% to $16), it seems that paper Pro Tour results still matter. The next Pro Tour comes right after the release of March of the Machines in early May. If you want to save some money, keep an eye on what is performing well at the tournament, because there's a good chance that the key cards in the breakout deck will see a meaningful price increase.
Meanwhile in Standard, Skrelv, Defector Mite (showcase) is the big winner of the week, increasing 61% to just under $10. The new Mother of Runes was expected to have an impact on Standard, and it has in various white aggro decks, but it has also taken off in Pioneer where Mono-White Humans and Bogles style auras decks play it as a protection spell. While being a rare from an in-print set limits Skrelv, Defector Mite (showcase)'s ceiling in the short term, the one-drop has the look of a long-term Pioneer staple and should be able to maintain a fairly high price. If you need copies, you might as well snag them.
Finally, in Commander the biggest gainers of the week are mostly cards that support poisoning players out of the game. The infect lord Hand of the Praetors climbed 27% to nearly $11, while Inexorable Tide gained 17% to $15, Inkmoth Nexus 8% to $39, and Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon 10% to $47 as players buy the cards they need to build around the new toxic and proliferate cards from Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Odds are that the prices of these cards will come back down a little bit eventually, the question is whether it is worth waiting. Right now poison is the hot topic in Commander, but give it another month or two and people will be building around Battles and Lord of the Rings cards; interest in poison (along with demand for poison cards) will start to fade. If you want to play poison now you'll pay a premium, otherwise you can wait a few months and save a few bucks as you put together your deck.
