Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week was a quiet one in the world of Magic finance. The biggest gainer of the week was Reserved List rare Selenia, Dark Angel, which doubled in price from under $10 to nearly $20 at its peak, although this seems to be a targeted buyout rather than real demand. A few months ago TCGplayer added the ability to see completed sales to their website. Through the entire month of December a total of 25 copies of Selenia, Dark Angel were sold, an average of less than one copy per day. Then on January 4th, a massive 133 copies were sold, with basically every copy on the site from near mint to damage being bought up, with near mint copies going for somewhere around $9-$10. When a buyout like this happens, sellers tend to relist their cards at a higher price hoping to cash in on the hype, which drives up the average cost. It doesn't seem like very many people are actually buying Selenia, Dark Angels for the current asking price, with just three near mint copies sold since the buyout ended at an average price of $14.30. As more copies are listed for sale, the price should drop as sellers race towards to the bottom in an attempt to sell their copies. If you need Selenia, Dark Angel, your best bet it to wait a bit for the price to normalize. Its price movement this week is clearly a finance-based buyout.
Meanwhile in Modern, the general trend is that some of the most playable cards from Modern Horizons 2 (or reprinted in Modern Horizons 2) are slowly increasing in price. This includes not only cards like Solitude, Endurance, and Urza's Saga, but some of the original Modern Horizons cards that were reprinted in Modern Horizons 2 with the retro-border, like The First Sliver (retro). Just before The First Sliver (retro) was reprinted in Modern Horizons 2, its price peaked at $45. Last week it was as low as $16 before climbing back towards $20. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the mythic continue to slowly increase in price. Slivers are a fan favorite tribe and The First Sliver (retro) has nearly surpassed Sliver Overlord as the most popular Sliver commander. If you think you might need a copy or four in the future, it makes sense to pick up The First Sliver (retro) now. It's hard to see its price going anywhere but up until it's eventually reprinted again.
Last but not least we have a new Secret Lair drop, with an interesting twist. The drop itself is just a set of five Swamp (252)s for $30 (or you can get a bundle of 25 Swamp (252)s for $120), which in and of itself isn't notable. What is interesting is that the drop will be on sale for the entire year, with a new basic land being added each month. This means the new Astrology Lands drop isn't really time-limited like past Secret Lairs, which is one step closer to Wizards just selling singles directly. In this case it doesn't matter much because the card for sale is just a promo basic land, but if Wizards starts doing this with other cards, it could have a major impact on the market. Imagine if you could always pick up a Secret Lair version of Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer for something like $30. This would go a long way towards dropping the price of Modern decks, and probably make Wizards a ton of money. On the other hand, Wizards moving more and more into the business of selling singles seems like a bad thing for local game stores. Of course, all of this is speculation and it's possible we never get evergreen Secret Lair drops cards that aren't basic lands, although between the Astrology Lands drop and the full Commander deck drop, it seems clear that Wizards is still experimenting with the benefits of selling cards directly to players.
