Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance the biggest winner - by far - was Ardent Plea. If you somehow missed it, on Monday Wizards banned Violent Outburst in Modern to power down cascade decks like Crashing Footfalls and Living End which has left cascade players scrambling for a replacement. While Ardent Plea isn't nearly as good as Violent Outburst, mostly because it's not an instant, it's also the next best three-mana value cascade spell, leading to a massive 413% increase to just over $15. If you're looking for a cheaper replacement, there is one other three mana-value cascade spell in Magic in Demonic Dread, which is the worst of the bunch since you need a creature on the battlefield to target to even cast it. But at just $0.40 the price is right if you are looking to cascade on the cheap.
Meanwhile in Commander The Wise Mothman (foil etched) - the second most popular of the new Fallout legends according to EDHRec - is making some financial waves. This week both Bloodchief Ascension (up 81% to $14.25) and Mindcrank (up 82% to $12.50) doubled in price as an easy combo finish alongside the rad counters The Wise Mothman (foil etched) give opponents. If you aren't familiar with the combo, the idea is to get three quest counters on Bloodchief Ascension so whenever a card goes into an opponent's graveyard, you drain for two and then stick a Mindcrank so whenever an opponent loses life they mill that many cards. Together this offers an infinite loop - an opponent loses life to Bloodchief Ascension which causes them to mill because of Mindcrank which will again trigger Ascension to start the process over again. Once assembled you simply let the rad counters from The Wise Mothman (foil etched) start the loop by milling the opponent and drain the table out of the game!
Finally in Pioneer, Picklock Prankster is on the rise, shooting up 175% this week to just over $2, which is a pretty high price for an uncommon printed just a few months ago. The adventure two-drop is a key piece to Pioneer Arclight Phoenix decks, which many people expected to be targeted with a banning this week, but managed to dodge the hammer. As an in-print uncommon, the price of Picklock Prankster shouldn't get too high, but if you opened some Wilds of Eldraine, it's certainly worth pulling the Faerie from your bulk.
