Weekly Update (Jul 09): 9 Nazgul vs Modern
|
Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, the biggest winner was everyone's favorite Cat Cauldron Familiar! The Throne of Eldraine uncommon has shot up from $1 to $6 over the past three weeks with most of that increasing coming in the past few days. The main reason for the increase is Rakdos Sacrificing developing into a top tier deck in Pioneer, although comboing with Samwise Gamgee (showcase) and a sacrifice outlet doesn't hurt either. It's also possible that we get even more Food support in our return to Eldraine this fall, which could make Cauldron Familiar even better. Personally I'd be digging through my bulk to find copies of Cauldron Familiar to sell or trade now while prices are high. While its past banning in Standard means Cauldron Familiar is unlikely to show up in our return to Eldraine, it will be reprinted eventually, and as an uncommon that sees minimal play in Commander, the price is likely to crash hard when that happens.
Meanwhile in the present, Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth released a couple weeks ago, and in a weird twist, the cost of the cards in the set actually increased meaningfully in the past week. On July 1st you could buy a complete set for $470, today it will set you back $575, lead by huge increases from cards like Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff, Witch-king of Angmar, One Ring to Rule Them All, and Nazgul (334). Normally the cost of the cards in a set decline as the set is opened, but so far the opposite seems to be happening with Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth. This said, we know there will be a holiday release in a few months and now that The One Ring (bundle) has been found, box prices should (hopefully) start to drop, which means the long-term trajectory of the set should still be down. If you are hoping to pick up singles for the best possible price, it looks like you should keep waiting.
Last but not least in the world of Commander, it seems that players are still building around Tom Bombadil (showcase) which means the best sagas are still on the rise. This week the biggest gainer was Kiora Bests the Sea God (planeswalker stamp), with the mythic saga jumping 67% to $14, although other powerful sagas like The Kami War (showcase) and Birth of the Imperium have shot up as well. At this point it's probably too late to pick up pieces for Tom Bombadil (showcase) on the cheap, but it's never too soon to look ahead to Commander Masters, which will be here in about a month. We know we're getting a five-color Sliver commander precon and three-color superfriends and enchantments. While there is a bit of a guessing game because you don't know what cards will be reprinted in the set itself, keep these themes in mind, because it's a good bet we'll be seeing some planeswalkers, slivers, and enchantments spiking in a few weeks. If you can guess right and pick up cards that don't get reprinted, you can save yourself a bunch of money by beating everyone else to the punch.
