Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, much of the big news is tied to Phyrexia: All Will Be One. While some of the price movement is related to cards that have been officially previewed, the two biggest gainers of the week - Myr Matrix which shot up more than 800% to $30 and Myr Turbine which jumped nearly 500% to $19 - are because of a leak. I'm not going to get into specifics here, but one recent leak showed a mythic five-color Myr legend, which immediately lead to some of the best Myr tribal cards being bought out. The biggest lesson here is that the Magic market doesn't wait for official previews. Avoiding leaks is a fine personal choice, but there will be times when this choice is quite costly, as the huge price increases of Myr Matrix and Myr Turbine exemplify.
Meanwhile in Modern, Grinding Station is still on the rise, gaining about 49% this week to $44. A few years ago, Grinding Station was a $0.50 bulk uncommon and as recently as last summer it was around $10. The reason for the huge price increase is that Grinding Station combo decks built around Underworld Breach are on the rise in Modern, currently floating solidly in the second tier for the format with some hype as a possible tier one deck. If you have copies floating around, I'd look to move them now, in part because the future of the deck is far from guaranteed and in part because Grinding Station seems like an easy card to reprint in a future supplemental product. If that happens, that would crush the card's price which is largely driven by the fact it has never been reprinted and is pushing 20 years old.
Finally, looking at the game from a more meta perspective, prices of Magic cards in general are on the decline. MTGGoldfish has indexes which track the costs of various groups of cards and formats, and they are pretty much all trending down. For example, after peaking at $186,000 during mid-2021, the cost of buying one copy of each card on the Reserved List has fallen to $151,000, a 18% drop. The same is true of most formats. The cost of Modern staples peaked at just under $5,000 in the middle of 2021 and is currently $3,250. In the same time frame the Pioneer index has dropped from over $1,800 to under $1,400. This isn't to say that Magic is cheap, but it's certainly cheaper than it was a couple of years ago.
