Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, the biggest winner was Obscuring Haze which briefly jumped from $2 to $20 before settling to just under $12. Obscuring Haze is from the same free spell cycle as Fierce Guardianship, Deflecting Swat, Deadly Rollick, and Flawless Maneuver, all of which see heavy play in Commander and are fairly expensive, topping out at around $50 in the case of Deflecting Swat and Fierce Guardianship. However, Obscuring Haze is considered to be the worst of the cycle by a pretty huge margin and only sees play in 2% of decks according to EDHRec. As far as the buyout itself, it seems to have been brought about by a Youtube video from Nitpicking Nerds which mentioned buying a bunch of copies of the free Fog on speculation. While I do think it's possible that Obscuring Haze was legitimately under priced at $2, considering you can buy literal Fog for $0.10, it's hard for me to imagine a slightly upgraded version will stick at the current post-buyout price, especially considering how little play it sees. Plus, there's a fair high reprint risk just because the rest of the cycle is in desperate need of a reprinting and it would be weird for Wizards to leave out one member of the cycle when they do eventually reprint the spells. My advice is that if you need a Fog, play the original for the time being and wait for a reprinting to pick up Obscuring Haze.
Meanwhile in the world of 60 card formats, Day's Undoing is on the rise with the Magic Origins mythic jumping 46% to $9 this week. The Timetwister with the drawback of ending your turn has developed into a somewhat unlikely Legacy staple in a Jeskai Control deck that uses it with Teferi, Time Raveler (to cast it at instant speed and get around the "end your turn" drawback) and Narset, Parter of Veils (where it Wit's Ends away the opponent's hand while also giving its caster seven new cards). It's hard to imagine the price going up too much more: Day's Undoing sees little play outside of Legacy and paper Legacy just isn't a huge driver of card prices at the point. It is a one-print mythic from a core set that released seven years ago; if something comes along to allow it to become a staple in Commander or even a format like Modern, you never know.
Finally, early this week we had a big round of bannings with Alrund's Epiphany (borderless), Faceless Haven, and Divide by Zero being banned in Standard and Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer meeting the ban hammer in Legacy. So far it seems like the impact on prices is minimal. While Faceless Haven dropped just $0.22 on the week and Alrund's Epiphany (borderless) just $0.24, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer actually increased in price by $0.04. This is probably a testament to just how much Standard and Legacy play has moved online, which in turn might mean the economical cost of banning cards is lower than it was in the past. This said, it is likely that both Alrund's Epiphany (borderless) and Faceless Haven will start trending slowly down. They don't see much play in non-Standard formats, which means there isn't much of a reason to buy them now that they are not allowed in Standard. If you need Alrund's Epiphany (borderless) for a Commander deck or Faceless Haven for something like Pioneer Spirits, the longer you are able to wait to pick them up, the more you should save. Meanwhile, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer will likely keep increasing as long as it's legal (and one of the best cards) in Modern.
