Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week, the biggest finance news come from Standard as pro players attempted to navigate a Field of the Dead and Oko, Thief of Crowns filled meta at Mythic Championship V. The biggest winner of the week was Embercleave, which increased a massive 383% to just under $20 as a key piece to decks like Mardu Knights and Gruul Aggro which look to use the equipment as a way to close out the game quickly before the powerful late game of Golos, Tireless Pilgrim and Nissa, Who Shakes the World come online. While Embercleave was almost certainly underpriced at $5, it's very likely overpriced now. Only one Standard mythic outside of Throne of Eldraine is worth more than $20 (Hydroid Krasis), which means it's likely that Embercleave will trend back down towards $10 as the hype dies down and the Standard meta develops after tomorrow's banned and restricted announcement.
Speaking of tomorrow's banned and restricted announcement, it's likely to have a huge impact on prices whether anything gets banned or not. If there's a banning Field of the Dead and perhaps a Bant staple (Oko, Thief of Crowns, Hydroid Krasis or Nissa, Who Shakes the World) are the most likely options. While holding onto cards that could be banned is risky, if we get a no changes announcement it's very possible that something like Field of the Dead or Oko, Thief of Crowns spike as more people buy into the deck (Oko, Thief of Crowns is already over $40, and based on its dominance in Standard and increasing play in Modern it has the look of a card that could end up pushing $75 like Jace, Vryn's Prodigy if nothing is banned). On the other hand, if we get one (or more) bannings, it will be almost like starting Throne of Eldraine Standard over again a month after the set released, which means cards that were overshadowed by Golos and Bant decks might get a new chance to shine and increase in price as a result.
Finally, Modern was mostly quiet this week, although we did get some movement from casual cards. Haakon, Stromgald Scourge (up 15% to $17.06) plays well with the Knights theme of Throne of Eldraine and is a really unique effect. Meanwhile, Kinsbaile Cavalier (up 11% to $10.50) is another solid piece of a Knight Commander deck. While it's a bit late to take advantage of the trend of casual cards spiking based on the theme of the newest set for Throne of Eldraine, it is about time to start picking up cards that could theoretically work well with the themes and tribe of Theros, since we'll be returning to the plane in just a few months. This means Minotaurs, enchantments matters cards, devotion, or "mono-colored matters" cards, and heroic or "targeting my own stuff for value" cards could all be in for a price increase in the not too distant future. While there is some guesswork involve, if you happen to guess right you can save yourself a nice chunk of change by picking up the cards you need for your Theros themed Commander decks now rather than waiting for the inevitable price spikes after the set is spoiled.
