Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
The biggest finance news this week is Masters 25, which released on Friday and the prices of a lot of the most expensive cards in the set are crashing. From a big picture perspective, the set is down about 17% in value since last week, and even that is a bit deceiving. For example, going by TCG-mid Imperial Recruiter is down 21% to about $55, but copies are being sold by multiple vendors for around $35, meaning the mythic has lost almost half of its value since last week. Typically with Masters sets, the best plan is to wait a month or two before picking up cards, but Masters 25 might hit its floor early. The EV of a box is already close to Iconic Masters, so while some cards might tick down a bit more, it's hard to see most of the playable cards dropping too much further.
Meanwhile in Standard and Modern, some of the biggest price movements seem to be based on breaking Mox Amber, with one-mana legendary creatures being hot items. In Standard, this means Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter (up 26%, but still close to bulk), and in Modern, Isamaru, Hound of Konda jumped 136% to just under $10 (although Zurgo Bellstriker hasn't moved as of yet). Whether or not the plan of playing sub-par one-drops to build a Mox is actually competitive remains to be seen; I'd probably err on the side of selling or trading away copies of Oviya and Isamaru into the hype.
Finally, Masters 25 is bringing down prices on Magic Online as well. If you're thinking of playing some drafts, you should probably just play phantom. Right now if you are winning 67% or more of your matches, playing non-phantom events makes sense from a financial perspective. Otherwise, you're better of taking the cheaper phantom option and just enjoying the draft experience rather than wasting your tix in hopes of a hard-to-open chase mythic like Jace, the Mind Sculptor.
