Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
While this week marks the release of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Standard rotation (at least digitally), most of the big finance news is attached to the surprising Commander banned list update which happened a few days ago. If you somehow missed it, Golos, Tireless Pilgrim was banned and Worldfire was unbanned. As a result Worldfire jumped 1422% to nearly $23. One one hand, this makes sense considering Worldfire is a one-print mythic from an old core set. On the other hand, Worldfire seems unlikely to be a Commander staple. While there are ways to build around it and cheat it into play (like Spellbinder, which increased 320% this week to $15), it costs a massive ten mana and doesn't directly win the game. My guess is that the current price is mostly based on hype and we'll see Worldfire trend back down in coming weeks. It won't go down to its previous bulk rare price, but perhaps to somewhere around $10.
Oddly, Worldfire wasn't the biggest winner of the week. That title belongs to Sway of the Stars: the Betrayers of Kamigawa rare shot up 3400% to $20 even though the sorcery is still on the Commander banned list. Considering that Sway of the Stars costs the same amount of mana and essentially does the game thing as Worldfire, this seems to be a bet that if Worldfire is safe for Commander, Sway of the Stars should be too, and that it will be unbanned in the future (although it seems like currently the Commander Rules Committee disagrees). Logically this makes sense, but there is one huge problem: not much about the Commander banned list is logical. While Sway of the Stars should be unbanned, it wouldn't be the least bit surprising to see it remain on the banned list for reasons no one can understand. That's how the Commander banned list works.
Finally Curse of Misfortunes is on the rise, increasing 160% to $3.55, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see it continue to creep up in coming weeks. It's the most important card in a Curse-themed Commander deck, and Curses not only got a bunch more tribe members in Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, but also the perfect leader in Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor. Keep an eye on other old Curses as well. Outside of perhaps Werewolves, Curses will likely be one of the most popular Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Commander decks to build, which means a lot of new demand and likely increasing prices. If you're planning to build Lynde, it probably wouldn't hurt to snag the Curses you need now, just in case.
