Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
There's really only one topic that matters this week as far finance is concerned: Modern Masters 2017. The full set was spoiled on Friday, and while it went out with a bit of a whimper, the set is absurd and stuffed full of value. As a result, it's having a huge impact on Modern card prices.
Let's start with the MM3 reprints. We are already seeing discounts of 40% (or more) off most cards compared to pre-reprinting prices. The Zendikar fetchlands are nearly half of their previous price and are continuing to drop. The same is true of Goblin Guide and many of the other playable rares. While many of these cards will continue to tick down over the next month or so, they likely won't drop too far. The box EV is already in the $220 range, and it probably won't go too far below $180, which means that the set might lose another 20% or 25% of its value—a reasonable amount, but nothing too crazy.
Of course the wildcard is just how much of the set is available. If it's really massive in supply (or if Wizards releases more over the summer like they did with Eternal Masters over the holidays), prices will drop more than expected. On the other hand, if supply is more limited than we think, chase rares (especially fetches) could rebound a lot quicker than most are imagining. Probably the easiest way to track supply is by looking up box prices. A week or two ago, MM3 boxes were as low as $170 or $180. Today they are about $225. My guess is supply will be fairly high and this price will fall again, but if it climbs up towards, or even above MSRP ($240), it will be a sign that supply is lower than expected.
As for the Modern staples that weren't reprinted in MM3, prices have increased significantly. Karn Liberated got a 35% bump and is over $70, Mishra's Bauble is a $40 uncommon, Chalice of the Void is up 13% to $70, and Eidolon of the Great Revel jumped 57% to nearly $13. And this doesn't even include a bunch of other cards that increased between 10% and 15% on the week. Unlike when a card is bought out and price normalize quickly, since most of these cards are unlikely to get reprinted in the near future, it's very possible their new prices stick. As a result, if you need them to finish a deck, you probably just have to bite the bullet and pay the new higher price.
