Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week the biggest financial news was the announcement of War of the Spark: Mythic Edition. The eight full-art foil planeswalkers from the set—including Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon—are currently worth around $280 for normal, non-foil printings. Considering that you also get two-thirds a box of War of the Spark along with the planeswalkers for $240, the product (for sale on the Hasbro Ebay Shop on May 1st) is a slam dunk from a financial perspective. Just make sure to order fast since the set is limited to 12,000 copies.
Meanwhile in Modern the biggest winner of the week was Celestial Kirin which jumped more than 3000% from bulk to $18. While probably more of a sweet episode of Against the Odds than a tournament-worthy combo, the reason for the spike is Ugin's Conjurant which, when cast for zero-mana with a Celestial Kirin on the battlefield blows up all lands, making it a weird, modern-legal build-your-own-Armageddon. If you have copies and can find a buyer (or trade partner) for anywhere near the current price, I’d be selling them. The long term trend is likely down unless the combo beats the odds and ends up in a competitive deck.
Finally, while Mythic Edition is getting all the hype, Signature Spellbook: Gideon was also announced this week, and thanks to Worship, Path to Exile, and Rest in Peace the set offers solid value, assuming it sells for $20 like last year's edition. The eight cards in the set add up to nearly $50 at current prices. If you need any of the cards in the set for Modern or Commander, picking up the Spellbook is better value than buying singles.
