Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week was surprisingly quiet in the world of Magic finance considering that we're right in the middle of Innistrad: Crimson Vow spoiler season. In fact, many of the biggest gainers this week have nothing to do with the new set. Leading the way were the evoke Elementals from Modern Horizons 2, with Solitude increasing 25% to $60, Fury 21% to $20, Grief 16% to $16, and Endurance 6% to $34. In many ways we're seeing a perfect storm driving up the price of the cycle: the release of Modern Horizons 2 is far enough in the past that the set is no longer being opened, the cycle has proven to be some of the most important cards in Modern, and paper Modern play is making its return (the SCG Invitational was this weekend, for example). We've seen heavily played cards from Modern Horizons shoot up to around $100 in the past. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the evoke Elementals continue to creep up in price until they are eventually reprinted. If you're planning on playing Modern in the near future, it might be worth snagging yours now. They are legitimate staples and unlikely to get much cheaper in the near future.
While the Magic world is focused on the Vampires, Werewolves, Humans, and Zombies from Innistrad: Crimson Vow, it looks like the finance community may have already turned their eyes towards the next set release - Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. Ninjas will making making their return and prices are already ticking up, with Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni climbing 14% this week to $23 and Silent-Blade Oni also seeing a bump. While picking up the Ninjas you need now makes sense - there's a decent chance we'll see more spikes as the release of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty draws near - there is risk. There's only a handful of tribe members in all of Magic and if Ninjas end up the theme of one of the commander precons, many of them could be reprinted, increasing supply and driving down prices. Also keep an eye on Spirits (unlikely to get a commander precon for Kamigawa since they are getting one with Crimson Vow), Shrines, and maybe some less popular Kamigiwa tribes like Samurai.
Finally, a reminder: be careful ordering Innistrad: Crimson Vow during presales. So far we have seven mythics spoilers (as of this writing) from the set with two priced at over $30 and three more in the $20-$25 range. Discounting Crimson Vow, there are five other sets legal in Standard and there are a total of five mythics worth more than $20 between them; an average of one per set. It's simply not possible for the Crimson Vow mythics to maintain their current prices, no matter how good they might be. In general you'll save some money if you wait another week or two for prices to normalize before picking up the singles you need.
