Weekly Update (Sep 2): Guilds of Ravnica Shocklands and Masterpieces
Guilds of Ravnica Spoilers |
Guilds of Ravnica previews kicked off this weekend at PAX with some major announcements! First up, to the delight of Modern players, shocklands are back! Eight Planeswalker Masterpieces are also being released, however, they are not attainable through regulars boosters, but rather directly from the Hasbro Toy Shop in a special 24 booster "Mythic Edition" box for $250. Lastly, we received the key mechanics for the new set: Convoke (returning), Surveil, Undergrowth, and Mentor. Check out the Guilds of Ravnica spoilers at mtg.fish/grn, and check out the important highlights of the set from SaffronOlive:

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
This week the biggest financial news comes from the Guilds of Ravnica previews from PAX where it was revealed that the shocklands are making their return to Standard. The lands have been ticking up over the past year with most now in the $15 range and the most expensive members of the cycle pushing towards $20. Having another reprint should drop them back down into the $5 to $10 range, at least for a while. If you've been looking for an excuse to buy into Modern or improve your Commander collection, make sure to take advantage of the new, cheaper prices. The lands are ultra-staples in both formats.
In Modern we had a couple of big increases based on the development of some new decks. Gilt-Leaf Palace is up to $34 after being under $15 a few months ago based on Green-Black Elves becoming a real deck in the format. Thankfully this spike is fairly easy to ignore from a player's perspective because you don't lose much by playing another dual land like Blooming Marsh or Overgrown Tomb. Meanwhile, Grinding Station more than doubled up to $7 thanks to a new build of the Thopter Foundry / Sword of the Meek combo which uses the artifact as an infinite mill engine. Just how good the deck really is remains to be seen.
Finally, with Guilds of Ravnica spoilers here, expect some Standard price spikes over the next weeks as the set is revealed. There seems to be a fairly heavy graveyard theme in the set so keep an eye on cards like Desecrated Tomb and Muldrotha, the Gravetide, which could have potential in post-rotation Standard with the right support. If a sweet synergy or post-rotation deck idea catches your eye, it's often smart to pick up the pieces early before prices rise, especially if the cards involved are currently relatively inexpensive.
