Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
It's been another quiet week in finance as far as Standard is concerned. Price changes come from new decks, and Aether Revolt Standard has been historically resistant to allowing anything but the big three decks to top eight a major tournament. The wildcard is tomorrow's Banned and Restricted Announcement. If there's one (or more) bannings, chaos will ensue. If there are no changes, things will likely remain quiet until Amonkhet spoilers start in a couple of weeks. At this point, there's really nothing you can do to prepare other than sell cards you don't plan on using; trying to pick and choose what (if anything) will be banned is likely a fool's errand, although if just one single card gets banned, Felidar Guardian would be the odds-on favorite.
Modern is still feeling the impact of Modern Masters 2017. Many of the cards in the set are dropping with Damnation, Blood Moon, and Linvala, Keeper of Silence (among others) all down about 20% on the week. This will likely continue for the next few weeks as people start to crack their boxes. If you want some of the reprinted cards, my advice is to hold off a bit longer. Based on past Modern Masters sets, the floor should be about a month from now.
Meanwhile, the winners are still the cards that dodged reprinting. Fulminator Mage is the biggest winner this week, up between 30% and 50% (depending on the printing) to between $30 and $40. Likewise, Through the Breach, Mox Opal, Crucible of Worlds, and Doubling Season have all been climbing as well and are in the $60 range. With no likely reprinting on the horizon, you might as well pick up your copies if you need them (possibly discounting Doubling Season, which could show up someplace weird and seemingly random).
