Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
Much the same as last week, all of the big finance news this week is tied to Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. Once again it's Werewolves leading the way. Daybreak Ranger nearly tripled in price to over $4. Huntmaster of the Fells climbed another 37% to $30, Arlinn Kord 38% to $13.60, and even Master of the Wild Hunt (not technically a Werewolf, but a card that plays well with the Wolf sub-theme of the Werewolf tribe) jumped 80% to $20. If there's good news, it is that the price of these cards is getting so high it's hard to imagine them increasing much more, especially considering their demand comes from exactly one Commander deck (Tovolar, Dire Overlord/Werewolves). The bad news is if you're looking to build Werewolves in Commander and don't already have copies of the older tribe members, it's going to get pricey.
As far as Standard, we're about a week away from rotation, but you wouldn't know if you looked at the prices of rotating cards. In the past, every year at rotation we'd see the prices of rotating cards crash as Standard-only players sold off their collections to prepare for the new format. This made rotation the perfect time to pick up rotating Commander and eternal cards on the cheap. But over the past few years this has changed. Commander all-stars are generally the most expensive cards in their sets almost immediately upon release and there just aren't that many paper Standard-only players anymore in the age of Commander and Arena. As a result, cards like the The Great Henge (planeswalker stamp), Triomes, Shadowspear, and Teferi, Master of Time (75) actually ticked up a slightly this week even though they are about to leave Standard. If you're looking to snag Commander cards and eternal favorites on the cheap, the best opportunity today is right after a set releases, assuming you can guess right.
Finally in Modern, after ticking up 5% on the week, Oboro, Palace in the Clouds is pushing $90 with foil copies somewhere around $450. A year ago the Saviors of Kamigawa land was $20 and even just a couple of months ago it was around $60. Somehow the land has managed to dodge reprinting for the past two decades, which combined with Saviors of Kamigawa being a relatively low-supply set, makes it easy for prices to spiral out of control with a small increase in demand. In this case the catalyst was Mill and Merfolk increasing in play thanks to support in recent sets like Modern Horizons 2. While a reprint in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty is unlikely since Wizards doesn't like to print legendary lands anymore, it would be shocking if Oboro didn't show up in Double Masters next summer. If you need a copy, I'd try to wait. Oboro, Palace in the Clouds will drop a lot when reprinted because its price is based more on low supply than high demand.
