Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance most of the big news is once again tied to the release of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The biggest gainer of the week was Fervent Charge with the Apocalypse rare going from bulk to $12 thanks to the printing of Isshin, Two Heavens as One. Issin's ability to double up attack triggers means that Fervent Charge essentially gives all of your attacking creatures +4/+4, making it a solid option for Isshin, Two Heavens as One Commander decks. Based on the past sales listed on TCGPlayer, the price seems likely to stick and might even continue to rise, with many near mint copies sold in the last couple days for around $15 with those in played condition going for $10 or $11. Expect to see more weird, old attack trigger card creeping up in coming weeks as early data from EDHRec suggests that Isshin, Two Heavens as One will be one of the most popular legends from the set for Commander.
Likewise, old Shrines are still on the rise thanks to Go-Shintai of Life's Origin, with Honden of Life's Web (up 90% to $4.61), Honden of Seeing Winds (up 36% to $8.75) and Sanctum of Stone Fangs (up 48% to $3) leading the way. At this point, if you're planning to build Shrines in Commander there isn't really a lot to be done other than to bite the bullet and pay the new higher price. Longer term the lesson is to pick up the cards you need early. Shrines being supported in Kamigwa: Neon Dynasty was extremely predictable, making picking up the older Shrines before spoiler season a fairly easy call, especially considering how cheap they were. Before Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty released you could have picked up all 11 Shrines for around $10, now they cost around three times as much. The risk of picking up cards like Shrines early is extremely low. The worse case is that Shrines aren't supported in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and their price stays the same. Outside of the opportunity cost, not much is lost. The best case is that we get a sweet new Shrine commander, prices skyrocket (which is what happened in this case) and you save yourself a bunch of money by getting the cards you need before everyone else. Keep this in mind for future set releases, because this same process repeats itself every set as Wizards prints spicy new commanders and players rush out to buy older cards that synergize with them to build their Commander decks. Getting your cards early is one of the easiest ways to stretch your finite Commander budget.
Last but not least, as far as Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty itself, we've got our first prices for the full art basic lands, and most are selling for somewhere around $2. In both set and drafter boosters about 1 in 3 basic lands will be the full art version, which means a typical set booster box will yield 10 of the full art basics and a draft booster box 12, adding a meaningful amount (between $20 and $25) to the expected value of a box. When you toss in the fact that the set has a $30 rare in Boseiju, Who Endures, Kamigawa: Neon Dynsty looks like one of the best set to crack for value in a long time.
