SCG Event Changes |
|
StarCityGames announced an update to their organized play. The tldr was the Invitational no longer contains Legacy, a general cutback in Legacy and West Coast events, and side events will no longer be paying out in cash, but rather Prize Wall tickets. Many viewed this announcement as another nail in the coffin for Legacy and its diminishing support.

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in finance the big winner is Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, up 13 percent to $33.15 on the back of various Eldrazi Ramp decks sneaking into the top tier of the Standard format. The two most played versions are Mono-Green and Red-Green, and their rise has been swift; a week ago neither deck was found on the list of the twelve most played in the format, but today they occupy the seventh and eight slots. If you combine them together, which isn't much of a stretch considering they share many of the same cards (the big difference is the GR version plays Dragonlord Atarka), Gx Eldrazi Ramp would slot in as the fourth most played, ahead of GW Megamorph and behind the three pillars that make up about 40 percent of Standard: Abzan Aggro, Atarka Red and Jeskai Black. Keep an eye on Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger as well. If it really is a four-of in a tier one deck, its price could be on the rise, especially once Ugin, the Spirit Dragon rotates this spring.
On Magic Online we are coming off a round of Innistrad flashback drafts and there are still some deals to be had. The buddylands — as high as 1.5 or 2 tix a month ago — are currently floating between 0.3 and 0.6, which makes them an amazing buy. We all know this cycle will be Standard legal again at some point; it's too clean and well-designed not to be, and this may happen as early as Shadows over Innistard this spring. Once they are reprinted, the new Standard demand will send prices through the roof, just like it did with painlands in Magic 2015. So if you want some for your collection or are looking for a good cheap investment, the enemy buddylands are where it's at on Magic Online. Along the same lines, you can pick up copies of Liliana of the Veil for about 10 percent cheaper than last week. While I wouldn't recommending going deep on a 83 tix card, if you were holding off on finishing your Modern collection, this might be a window — unless you really believe she will be reprinted this spring, in which case you should continue to hold off.
Finally, Kabira Evangel was bought out a week ago, driving the price from $1.20 to nearly $5 (it has since stabilized to $3.80). The problem is buylists haven't budged; they are still sitting at $1 even. Likewise, eBay shows a grand total of five English playsets sold over the past week in the $12-$14 range. So what are you to do with all those copies you picked up in a panic last weekend? I guess you can keep waiting, but the Allies hype is already dying down, so there's a very realistic possibility that you'll have to bite the bullet and take a loss even though the card shot up 400 percent overnight. This is the problem with joining the buyout brigade on cards without real demand. While the profits look great on paper, buylist prices don't rise and you're left holding the bag or hoping to get lucky and be the one playset a day sold on eBay.
