Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, it's a Secret Lair Commander deck that's making waves. This month the third Secret Lair Commander deck went on sale (surprisingly, at least compared to past releases, you can still snag it today almost two weeks post-release). The deck is built around Angels and some of the biggest gainers these week are obvious upgrades for the deck. Leading the way is the planeswalker Serra the Benevolent (Artist Series Rebecca Guay) which shot up 36% to almost $11, followed closely by Angel of Jubilation which increased 30% to over $10.50. With past Secret Lair Commander deck releases, the impact has been small because the decks typically sold out in a matter of minutes or hours, but the long availability of the Angel deck suggests that perhaps the supply is higher than in the past, which is allowing the deck to have a bigger impact on prices.
Meanwhile in Modern, the Lord of the Rings rare Flame of Anor is on the rise. A month ago the instant was essentially a bulk rare, sitting at about $1. Today it is up to $6 based on increasing Modern play. Along with various Wizard-y control decks like Izzet and Grixis, the card has found a home in Temur Rhinos which has taken to splashing a couple of Mutavaults to power up the Flame of Anor. While overall the price of Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth is still slowly trending down, as new cards find homes in Modern, expect this to keep happening. At this point you might as well hold onto any bulk rares you have from the set with any chance of seeing Modern play. If they happen to break out, they could end up being worth a few bucks.
Finally, we got the full spoiler for Wilds of Eldraine this week, and the biggest news from the set is the special Enchanted Tales sheet is overflowing with high value enchantment reprints like Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, and Rhystic Study. We've seen in the past with things like Strixhaven's Mystical Archives or The Brothers' War's Retro Artifacts that these reprintings typically have a meaningful impact on prices. Chase cards like Mox Amber (retro) and Demonic Tutor (borderless frame break) lost between 1/3 and 1/2 of their value after their respective reprints with lower-end cards losing even more. The normal advice here is that the prices will drop and then recover, but I'm starting to wonder if this is still true considering that some of the best cards on the Enchanted Tales sheet were also just reprinted in Commander Masters. Multiple reprintings in a year often drops prices and keeps them low for years. Snag what you need for your decks at a discount, but at this point holding onto high end non-Reserved List cards you aren't using seems pretty risky. In the past reprints came as a steady drip - sometimes too slow of a drip - but now they are a flood and even the best and most in-demand cards won't maintain much value they are reprinted multiple times.
