Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, the biggest winner was a Standard card - Hallowed Haunting - which nearly tripled up in price to $30. This is, at least in part, because of Standard itself, where the enchantment has seen increased play in various Enchantress style decks since the release of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, although it's important to not overlook the impact of Commander on Hallowed Haunting's price. While the enchantment only sees play in 2% of decks overall according to EDHRec, if you look at the commanders that most frequently play the mythic, they are mostly from the last two sets with Katilda, Dawnhart Martyr (showcase), Satsuki, the Living Lore, and Go-Shintai of Life's Origin leading the way. With so much Standard play taking place on Magic Arena, it's rare to see such huge price spikes for Standard-only cards, but as we've seen in the past with cards like Goldspan Dragon (planeswalker stamp) and The Great Henge, mythics that see both Standard and Commander play often end up among the most expensive cards in their sets.
Meanwhile in the world of Commander, Unwinding Clock was bought out this week, doubling in price from around $12 to nearly $25. While the artifact has seen fringe play in Commander for a while in various artifact decks as a pseudo-Seedborn Muse, it's become a staple in Shorikai, Genesis Engine decks where it allows you to untap your commander to draw cards (and make Pilots) during every player's turn. Whether the price sticks remains to be seen. If you look at past sales on TCGplayer, very few near mint copies have sold since the price spiked, with players preferring played copies in the $18-$20 range. If you need a copy, look for the Commander 2018 reprint which is currently about $5 cheaper than the New Phyrexia version.
Speaking of cards that combo with Shorikai, Genesis Engine, Intruder Alarm is also on the rise, with most versions doubling up from around $10 to $15 or $20 this week. Much like Unwinding Clock, Intruder Alarm offers a Shorikai deck a way to repeatedly untap Shorikai, Genesis Engine, but in some ways Intruder Alarm is even more powerful since each time you activate Shorikai (assuming it's in creature form), you'll make a Pilot token that will untap Shorakai so you can activate it again. While not fully infinite because you'll run out of mana eventually, the combo will let you draw a bunch of cards (and make a bunch of 1/1's each turn). Thankfully Intruder Alarm has several reprintings ranging from 8th Edition to Secret Lair to Mystery Boosters. The Mystery Booster foil is actually tied with the Stronghold version for the cheapest printing available.
