Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week, the biggest finance news is driven by our new, post-rotation Throne of Eldraine Standard format. While the format is still in its infancy, some decks and cards have already risen to the top of the format. The biggest winner this week is Golos, Tireless Pilgrim, which basically doubled in price to just under $3. Various Golos / Field of the Dead decks were everywhere at this weekend's SCG Open. It wouldn't be a surprise for Golos, Tireless Pilgrim to continue to rise in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Cavalier of Flame increased 85% to $5.54 as a key combo piece to a new Fires of Invention deck that looks to play Cavalier of Flame (and Cavalier of Gales) on turn five for free with Fires of Invention, spend all of its mana activating Cavalier of Flame to give the Cavaliers haste and pump them, and possibly win the game on the spot with 15 or more damage. Otherwise, Legion's End ticked up 60% as an answer to Field of the Dead Zombies, while Knight of the Ebon Legion and Spawn of Mayhem are still increasing based on the success of Mono-Black and Rakdos Aggro. Expect more changes in the coming weeks as we move towards our first Mythic Championships featuring Throne of Eldraine Standard.
As far as losers this week, our list is littered with Brawl deck cards, with pretty much all of the most important cards from the decks losing around half of their value now that they are actually for sale and cards are entering the market. Despite these big decreases, you're still better of waiting if you don't have your Brawl cards yet: Wizards has promised that a reprinting on the way, which means even if your local game store (or big box store) is sold out, they shouldn't be for too long. Last time we had a major shortage of a preconstructed deck on release day was the True-Name (em>Nemesis</em) deck back in Commander 2013, and the deck ended up massively overprinted during the second print run, driving prices down to near-bulk levels for many cards. If you are looking for singles from the Brawl decks, waiting until the second printing should save you a decent amount of money, and if you're looking for the precons themselves, you should be able to get them for a reasonable price (somewhere near $20) after stores restock with the second printing.
Last but not least, we may have more buy a box trouble on the horizon. While it's unlikely to be a four-of staple like Nexus of Fate, Kenrith, the Returned King (up 44% to $13 this week) is showing up in Fires of Invention decks as the ultimate mana sink. One of the biggest issues with Nexus of Fate was that it only came in foil, and foils often cause issues in competitive play due to their tendency to warp, which leads to some interesting proxies at tournaments. However, Kenrith, the Returned King is different: it technically has a non-foil printing from Deluxe Collection, and as a result, you can't simply ask a judge for a proxy if your foil Kenrith, the Returned King is warped. The end result is that non-foil copies of Kenrith are actually more valuable than foils copies. If you're planning on playing Kenrith, the Returned King in a competitive environment, it's probably worth it to "splurge" on a non-foil to avoid any issues with your deck being illegal due to warped foil Kenriths.
